Mission Doctors Association

When you support Mission Doctors, your gift does far more than fund medical care—it helps build the foundation that makes every moment of healing possible.

Long before a doctor steps into a Catholic Mission Hospital or greets a patient for the first time, your generosity is already at work behind the scenes.

Since 1959, Mission Doctors has made it possible for Catholic Healthcare Professionals—and often with their families— answer the call of their faith and bring life-saving care to Church-run hospitals and clinics around the world. The Bishops and Hospital Administrators tell us all the time, they see a difference in the medical missionaries who come from Mission Doctors because of this preparation!

But sending a doctor to serve isn’t as simple as booking a plane ticket. It takes thoughtful preparation, faithful discernment, and your continued support.

Every site where a Mission Doctor serve is carefully evaluated to ensure:

  • Professional infrastructure where a doctor’s skills will be well utilized
  • Adequate housing and daily support
  • A safe and welcoming environment

A partnership with the local Catholic Church, providing the Spiritual Connection our medical missionaries are seeking and our organization has been committed to for more than six decades.

Missionaries do not “go” they are “sent”.

Whether an individual, couple or family serves for three-years or just a few months, they know that they are sent by a faithful community here at home.  Thanks to donors like you, an experienced and knowledgeable staff can answer questions, and provide the connections as part of the discernment process. Wither going short- or long-term, the preparation, formation, and care is here to ensure they are ready to serve.

Long-term Mission Doctors complete a four-month residential formation program and receive support for airfare, health and evacuation insurance, and a small stipend—so they can focus on what matters most: serving their patients.  Thanks to the Dr. James Carey Fund, those burdened with heavy loan repayments do not need to wait to serve.  This fund, named for an early Mission Doctor – covers their payments.

Short-term doctors attend a weekend Retreat/Seminar designed to help them discern and prepare for service. And all healthcare professionals and their families are hosted by the mission site with room and board.

And every mission site is visited annually by a member of our formation team — visiting the Mission Doctors and their families, the Hospital Administrators and local Bishop.  These face-to-face meetings, ensure the organization an understanding of needs of all parties, and can provide the direction for the future

Your support makes all this possible!

You are part of a quiet but powerful preparation process—one that strives to be aware of the needs of both the Mission Doctors and the Mission Site.  You help MDA work to ensure the right doctor is at the right bedside, at the right time. You are sending not just medical professionals, but faithful Catholics who bring healing and hope in Christ’s name.
